Business Liability – Tips to Avoid Being Sued

Posted by admin Comments (0)

No doubt you’ve heard it over and over – we live in a litigious society! When we hear something again and again, it’s easy to switch off and become a little complacent about it all, but law suits are a very real risk for any business. While risk assessment should factor into your financial decisions, your business insurance may offer you a certain level of financial protection, there are many things you can do that may help to reduce the unhappy situation that you’ll need to make a claim.

Safety and quality

This is a broad topic however, in essence, being diligent about safety on your premises and the quality of your service or product you provide will go a long way towards reducing risk. Your strategy may include safety and training procedures, ensuring you are following ‘best practice’ and are aware of specific requirements that relate to your industry; and creating an environment that keeps stress to a minimum and discourages workplace bullying or discrimination.

Put it in writing

When something has been put in writing it’s harder to dispute. Documenting client instructions, complaints from customers, clients and visitors, actions taken to prevent or resolve issues, maintenance and repair records, and employee vetting processes are all practices that may one day disprove a claim that you were negligent.

Your business insurance should be ‘Plan B’ – ‘Plan A’ should be prevention!
